Kids In The Middle Expands Support for Families with a New Service

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)

At Kids In The Middle, we understand that separation and divorce can be especially difficult for young children. Changes in routines, transitions between households, and differences in parenting styles can leave children feeling overwhelmed, confused, and unsure of what to expect.

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an evidence-based counseling approach designed for children ages 2 to 7 and their caregivers. PCIT helps strengthen the parent-child relationship while improving communication, emotional regulation, and behavior management skills in a supportive and structured environment.

It is common for young children to experience behavioral regression or display disruptive behaviors during and after family transitions. Children may struggle with separation anxiety, emotional outbursts, difficulty following directions, or increased challenges during transitions between households. These behaviors are often a response to major changes in their environment and routines.

PCIT helps parents build confidence and consistency in responding to these behaviors while creating stronger, healthier connections with their child. Through live coaching and guided interactions, parents learn practical tools to:

  • Strengthen attachment and trust with their child
  • Improve communication and emotional connection
  • Reduce disruptive or challenging behaviors
  • Establish clear expectations and consistent discipline strategies
  • Help children follow directions through simple, developmentally appropriate steps with immediate and predictable consequences
  • Create greater structure and stability across two households

For families navigating separation or divorce, consistency can be especially important. PCIT helps parents work toward more aligned parenting approaches, even when children are adjusting to different homes, schedules, and rules.

As a nonprofit organization focused exclusively on supporting children and families during and after separation, divorce, and remarriage, Kids In The Middle is uniquely positioned to offer PCIT within the context of family transitions and co-parenting challenges.

To increase accessibility for families throughout the greater St. Louis region, PCIT services may also be offered virtually through Zoom when clinically appropriate and necessary.

Through PCIT, families gain tools, support, and guidance that help young children feel more secure, connected, and confident during times of change.
