Eight-Session Parenting Class

The eight-week virtual class is psychoeducational and provides parents with resources and tools regarding a variety of areas, including the following: self-regulation, typical development stages, how to communicate effectively with children, boundary setting, positive discipline techniques, and more. This class addresses these tough parenting topics through a separation/divorce perspective. Certificates of completion are awarded when the entire series is completed.

Session 1: Self-Regulation and Self-Care
Explore the impact of stress in each area of life, the effect this can have overall, and coping skills/tools for effective management. Being better equipped to care for ourselves directly affects our ability to care for others.

Session 2: Typical Stages of Development
Take a look at typical child development, especially regarding the brain as well as how to effectively respond according to which portion of the brain is in use. We will also take a closer look at behaviors and the impact of temperament.

Session 3: Effective Communication Skills Part I
Focus on the components of strong/effective communication, how to model use these skills for your children, tools & techniques, and overcoming obstacles to effectively communicating.

Session 4: Effective Communication Skills Part II
Focus on the components of strong/effective communication, how to model use these skills for your children, tools & techniques, and overcoming obstacles to effectively communicating.

Session 5: Establishing Age-Appropriate Boundaries
Establish and maintain age-appropriate boundaries, suggestions provided for managing boundary testing behaviors, and explore a closer look at appropriate information to share with your child.

Session 6: Positive Discipline
Dispel ineffective forms of discipline and generate helpful solutions for parents to effectively manage negative behaviors in children. We will take a closer look at discipline according to a child’s age, temperament, etc.

Session 7: Dealing with Grief of Separation/Divorce
Address the various grief responses that families of separation/divorce may experience and how to navigate through this. We will take a look at managing one’s own feelings/emotions as well as supporting your children.

Session 8: Managing the Level of Conflict with Your Co-Parent
Explore the Co-parenting relationship and how to appropriately and effectively maintain and the level of conflict in this relationship for the best interest of one’s children.
